April 2 - 6 / EXQUISITE SURFACES AND DETAILS
A wide variety of my favorite details from polished surfaces off a plane to inlays, beads and cockbeads, pattern bandings, working with silver and unusual materials.

Kelly Mehler's School of Woodworking

Berea, Kentucky

April 30 - May 4 / CABINET CURIOSITIES
A technique and hand tool rich project that explores design, case construction, solid backs, shelves, case corners, drawers, doors, and moldings.

May 5 - 6 / WORKING WITH CURVES
What are the different ways to create curved parts, what are the advantages and disadvantages of each method, and how do you decide the best approach. We'll laminate, cooper, cut curves out of the solid, and maybe even steam bend, and then do some dovetails or other joinery with those curved pieces.

Center for Furniture Craftsmanship

Rockport, Maine
August 13 - 24.

ESSENTIALS OF CASEWORK
Solid-wood case construction is the heart of fine furniture making. Participants in this workshop explore the fundamentals by designing and building their own small cabinets and cases. Projects may have drawers, doors, shelves, or secret compartments. The class emphasizes hand skills and hand tools to size, smooth, shape, and fit parts, but also integrates machines to make the building process efficient and accurate.

Lie Nielsen Toolworks

Warren, Maine
August 25 - 26.

DECORATIVE FACES AND EDGES
Only a taste, but a class that will expose you to many new details and ways of thinking about your edges and surfaces. We'll explore surfaces right off a plane, chamfers and molded edges, string and other surface inlays, beads, cockbeads, and patterned bandings.

DICTUM

DICTUM, Metten, Germany  (About an hour east of Munich)
October 1 - 7.

Oct 1-2 / PRECISION WITH HAND TOOLS
Hand tools are efficient, highly accurate, safe, enjoyable, and even with modest skill can open up whole news ways of working by hand and eye alone.  This class is a series of fun exercises of typical furniture making techniques: flattening surfaces to a polished smoothness, cutting end and long grain edges fitting a drawer face or into sweeping fair curves, shaping simple moldings, working to patterns, cutting chamfers and bevels (table edges), cutting and fitting several joints and an inlay or two.

October 3 - 7 / INLAID SIDE TABLE
Small tables are a great design project, they're fun and quick to build, and always useful. This is one of my favorites, an ideal project to tune up your hand tools skills and explore some new ideas-inlays, a leg shape, tabletop edge profile, top overhang, and apron details. We'll build from start to finish, from drawings to the shellac.

Northern Italy

October 13 - 20
Northern Italy, dates and classes undecided at this time
