This will be my 7th year teaching for DICTUM, a maker and seller of some of the world’s best tools. They run an amazing variety of courses; mine focus on specific furniture projects, hand tools, design, and details. The workshop is located a bit over an hour from Munich in a small Bavarian town along the Danube River and in a wide agricultural valley. Everything about the shop and setting is wonderful. Students come from all over Europe, so discussions and meals are always interesting and entertaining.
We will build a round molding plane (it cuts a hollow). The work involves shaping a round sole on the solid beech plane, chopping an angled bed for the iron, shaping and heat treating a round blade, fashioning a shapely wedge to lock the blade in position, and tuning the plane. Not only is this a useful tool for making moldings and shaped parts, but we will use it to smooth the back of the door in the COOPERED CABINET to follow.
